Ces mots m&rsquo;ont toujours fascin\u00e9 : je me suis souvent demand\u00e9 d&rsquo;o\u00f9 ils venaient et pourquoi ils \u00e9taient utilis\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Cet article tente de r\u00e9unir le plus l&rsquo;\u00e9cole de Pythagore, il y avaient est\u00a0<em>acousmaticiens<\/em> (ceux qui ne faisaient qu&rsquo;\u00e9couter) et les\u00a0<em>math\u00e9maticiens<\/em> (ceux qui, au contraire, faisaient).<\/p>\n<p>Le mot \u00ab\u00a0math\u00e9matiques\u00a0\u00bb viendrait donc de cette \u00e9poque. En grec,\u00a0<em>math\u00eama <\/em>signifie \u00ab\u00a0sciences\u00a0\u00bb. Les math\u00e9maticiens \u00e9taient donc ceux qui faisaient les sciences, ceux qui les construisaient.<\/p>\n<p>Notez au passage que le mot est au pluriel, car il y a plusieurs sciences. Les personnes qui utilisent le singulier veulent juste se donner un genre (\u00e0 mon avis).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Theoreme\"><\/span>Th\u00e9or\u00e8me<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ce mot vient du grec\u00a0<em>thea<\/em>, qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0spectacle\u00a0\u00bb (et non de\u00a0<em>theo<\/em>, qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0dieu\u00a0\u00bb).<\/p>\n<p>Comme le mot \u00ab\u00a0th\u00e9orie\u00a0\u00bb, le mot \u00ab\u00a0th\u00e9or\u00e8me\u00a0\u00bb a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit \u00e0 partir du verbe grec\u00a0<i>theorein<\/i>\u00a0signifiant \u00ab\u00a0observer\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Notez que le mot\u00a0<em>th\u00e9\u00e2tre<\/em> et\u00a0<em>th\u00e9or\u00e8me<\/em> ont la m\u00eame racine.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Corollaire\"><\/span>Corollaire<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ce mot vient du latin\u00a0<em>corolla<\/em>, qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0petite couronne\u00a0\u00bb. On donnait aux acteurs une petite couronne pour les gratifier. Il faut donc voir un corollaire comme un \u00ab\u00a0bonus\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 un th\u00e9or\u00e8me.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Algebre\"><\/span>Alg\u00e8bre<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ce mot vient de l&rsquo;arabe\u00a0<em>al-jabr<\/em>. Le math\u00e9maticien Al-Khwarizmi fut le premier arabe \u00e0 d\u00e9crire les op\u00e9rations pour r\u00e9soudre les \u00e9quations du premier degr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;op\u00e9ration consistant \u00e0 passer de \u00ab\u00a0\\(5x-2=3x+6\\)\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0\\(5x-3x=6+2\\)\u00a0\u00bb fut nomm\u00e9e\u00a0<em>al-jabr<\/em> (remise en place).<\/p>\n<p>Celle consistant \u00e0 passer \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0\\(2x=8\\)\u00a0\u00bb fut nomm\u00e9e\u00a0<em>al-muqabalah<\/em> (simplification).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Abscisse_et_ordonnee\"><\/span>Abscisse et ordonn\u00e9e<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Historiquement, l&rsquo;ordonn\u00e9e (du latin <i><bdi class=\"lang-la\" lang=\"la\">ordinare<\/bdi><\/i> signifiant \u00ab mettre en rang \u00bb). est apparue avant l&rsquo;abscisse (du latin <i><bdi class=\"lang-la\" lang=\"la\">abscisa<\/bdi><\/i> signifiant \u00ab coup\u00e9e ou scind\u00e9e \u00bb).<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9tant donn\u00e9s un point sur une courbe P et son projet\u00e9 orthogonal H sur l&rsquo;axe horizontal, l&rsquo;ordonn\u00e9e d\u00e9signait la longueur du segment [PM]. Ces segments \u00e9taient dispos\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on ordonn\u00e9e, d&rsquo;o\u00f9 le mot. L&rsquo;axe des abscisses \u00e9tait donc coup\u00e9 par ces ordonn\u00e9es, et <em>abscisse<\/em> signifie justement \u00ab\u00a0coup\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Le mot \u00ab\u00a0ordonn\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 en France en 1658 par Blaise Pascal et \u00ab\u00a0abscisse\u00a0\u00bb, en 1692 par Leibniz.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Calcul\"><\/span>Calcul<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Vient du latin\u00a0<em>calculus<\/em>, qui signifie \u00ab\u00a0caillou\u00a0\u00bb.
